There’s something under your bed.
It hates you. It wants to devour you and everyone you love.
Dad’s at work. Mom’s dead drunk and no help whatsoever.
Maybe your stuffed rabbit can help, since he seems to be alive and talking now. Then again, maybe that just means you’ve finally gone around the bend.
Whatever plan you come up with to survive the night, though, you’d better not let so much as a fingertip stray off your mattress. If you do, you’ll be ripped to bloody chunks by…
THE THING UNDER YOUR BED.
What’s up, goat lovers? I’ve surfaced from the infernal depths today to give you a quick review of this novella that I managed to get my grubby hooves on a couple of months back. I was drawn in by the cover – it looked delicious. Pulpy, like the horror books of old. Has that nice musty taste that I so enjoy when devouring a book.
It’s about a little girl who finds herself trapped on her own bed because there’s something really nasty lurking beneath it. She can’t count on her parents for help – it’s one of those types of households. Alone with her stuffed rabbit, she tries to figure out how to survive the ordeal.
It’s a simple premise, executed with the type of savagery that makes my lips curl upwards into that smiling thing. A truly horrific set-up and a protagonist of the ‘must protect at all costs’ age makes for a gripping read, and the lines between good and evil are very clearly established. Of course, as with all Kozeniewski books, there’s more going on under the surface here.

This poor little girl has problems. Her homelife and parental situation aren’t ideal for her to grow up in. I’d feel sorry for her even without the horrible monster lurking below, waiting to gobble her up. And the monster… let me tell you… it is a nasty beast. Really nasty. A nasty talking beast. That whispers hideous things. I’d probably be friends with it, if I met it. I know a few people that deserve a good tormenting.
If you’re looking for a reasonably short read that will have you on the edge of your seat (or pulling your feet away from the edge of your bed), this is a great one to settle in with on a dark night. Recommended to fans of monster horror, and tales of children using their wits and bravey to (try to) overcome adversity.
