Bad God’s Tower – by Erica Summers – Book Review

Vicious criminals, Eugene Dempsey and Chester Craven, escape Wyoming Territorial Prison armed with nothing but striped prisoner pajamas and a Lakota’s hand-drawn map that, according to legend, will lead them to the unfathomable riches in a secret tunnel burrowed into the base of Devil’s Tower. Seeking their golden fortune, the fugitives head north, leaving their dusty trail stained in the blood of innocents.

With two determined buffalo soldiers nipping their heels, the sadistic escapees will soon realize all the gold in the land isn’t worth what lies in wait for them in the claustrophobic underground beneath.

Dark bleatings everybody! This week, I’m here to tell you about the rootin’ tootin’ good time I had with this novella. We have a jailbreak – and a particularly nasty one at that – an adventure, horrid villains, and two other cowboys hot on their heels. Well, maybe everyone isn’t a cowboy per se, but I had a very “gunslinger” vibe when I was reading this and my brain has gone full yeeeeeehaw!

Chester and Eugene are nasty pieces of work, the kind of nasty that is just delicious to read in a story like this. If there’s one thing more fun than rooting for a hero, it’s rooting for the downfall of these dickheads. They think they’re going to unearth treasure but they end up unearthing something that’s potentially nastier than they are. There’s a lovely symmetry to this story, a sort of karma-like full circle sort of thing going on.

It’s a lot of fun if you’re after a short read to sit down with for an hour while you enjoy a nice cup of tea. If you’d like to get your own copy, or check out the author (an extremely interesting person, by the way), the links you need are below:
