Tooth & Claw – by Dave Jeffery – Book Review

There’s no place quite like Cofton Grange. Set in twelve-hundred acres of hills and woodland, it is a playground for the wealthy where, for the right price, every desire is made a reality.
Tonight is special; a group of hunters have bought into the most exclusive contest, the opportunity to track and kill a fantastic and terrifying creature not of this Earth. The stakes are high, each competitor determined to claim the kudos that will come from taking down their incredible prey.
But as the moon rises and the pursuit begins, each hunter is about to find out that sometimes there are fiercer things than the competition.
Tooth and Claw—The hunt is on!

Dark bleatings, my lovely tribe! Today I’m enthusing about this awesome werewolf novella from Dave Jeffery. I’ve been going on and on for at least a year about the lack of great werewolf fiction in my life. Off the top of my head, I could probably list up to 5 books of this ilk that I love, and after that I’d struggle. Finally, the talented and wonderful Dave Jeffery (who, by the way, is one of the best human beans I’ve ever had the pleasure to know), brought me into the world of Tooth & Claw.

A group of illegal big game hunters gather at a mansion, situated on some very specific, secret, private hunting grounds, all gearing up to buy into their next hunt – the victim of which is a mystery until their fancy rich host reveals it. It is…. dum dum DUUUUUUUUUM…. A WEREWOLF! A mythological creature that until now, none of the hunters knew existed.

The hunt is on… but who is in fact the hunter, and who is the hunted? I vehemently oppose hunting for sport – to each their own, but personally I think it’s barbaric to gun down an animal that isn’t even aware it’s in danger. For that reason, I loved to loathe this group of dastardly dickheads, and I got to root for the werewolf, which is a nice change because usually I’d consider the werewolf the villain of the piece.

Guys, I had SUCH a blast reading this book. It’s so much fun, but I can’t adequately put it into words without spoiling it. As usual, Jeffery’s characters just pop off the page in their believability and realism. You might not like them, but you do understand them. And those kills scenes…. ooohhh boy! They’re so bloody, so violent, so exactly what you want in a werewolf story. It’s actually hilarious to me that Jeffery has the savage imagination required for scenes like that because he’s just so unbelievably kind that you’d think that his head would just be full of hearts and butterflies. But apparently there’s also a lot of blood and guts in there. And claws. And tooths.
