Backwaters – by Lee Rozelle

Welcome to Tallapoochee, a Southern backwater plagued by an experimental toxin that’s turning townsfolk into genetically modified freaks. Follow a puzzling trail of atrocities committed by an enigmatic river cult. Delve into thrilling tales of body horror, bizarro, and the weird. Read the unthinkable testimonies of the living and the dead.

This “water-breaking” collection of twelve intertwined stories combines body horror and Southern Gothic humor in a clash between a cabal of dark scientists and gospel-preaching wrestlers with a secret past. In turns terrifying and bizarre, Lee Rozelle’s new fiction is a shocking journey into murky medicine, conspiracy, and the horrors of watershed destruction.

Dark bleatings, my awesome tribe. This is easily one of the weirdest books I’ve ever read. It’s a collection of short stories that are all set in one place, so we are offered many perspectives of people sharing weird experiences – and yet each story is very different from the last. You’ll find bizarro, body horror, and some stuff so weird it feels like it came from one of those bizarre sci-fi horror B-movies from the 1960’s. All of this, of course, I mean as a compliment.

My 3 favourite stories in the collection are:

LYLE AND THE SPACE MAN

This is so weird that I’m not really sure how to describe it. A barber has a particularly strange customer. There might be some sort of fish. Don’t let my inability to properly talk about this trick you into thinking it isn’t great, because it is, I just simply can not quite describe it without spoilers.

LORD OF THE FISHES

An unconventional yoga instructor has more influence that one might usually expect. Brother Chester is forced to recall some… let’s say “unsavoury ” past actions, and there are quite severe consequences for him tapping into these memories.

TRANSPLANT

This one was my favourite. It’s about an asshole frat bro called Austin – you know, the misogynistic type that has very likely assaulted several women. He spends much of his time quite openly lusting after his girlfriend’s flatmate, and then one day she surprises him by returning his interest. She disappears afterwards, but not without leaving him something…

I loved this one. It’s one of the most perfect tales of karma I’ve ever read.

Overall, if you’re looking for properly weird horror fiction, I think you’ll really like this one. If you’d like to get a copy or check out the author, I’ve popped the links below for you:
