Droplets – by Paul Lubaczewski

From the Preditor and Editor award-winning author Paul Lubaczewski comes a new collection of short stories. The forgotten early tries of God to make sentient beings, zombies, cannibals, down on their luck glam rockers all of them are hiding inside the pages of this collection waiting to waylay the unprepared. From ghouls to cults, to the source of our madness, it’s all in there. Includes the never before published tale of curses and bloody murder Blackout. All of our sadness, all of our madness, it all falls in droplets.

Dark bleatings, my excellent tribe! Today I’m talking about a really fun horror collection that offers what I think is a great selection of both old-school and contemporary ideas. There’s a bit of the stuff we all know and love in there, and also some more “present day”, if you will, types of horror lurking in these dastardly pages.

As usual, let me tell you about my favourite 3 tales!

BLACKOUT

Can’t say much about this one for fear of spoilers, but let’s just say that a thief gets more than he bargained for when he’s paid to steal something, and the “something” in question is… erm… well, it’s cursed.

FRIDAY AT THE NIGHTMARE HOTEL

This one is great, camp, silly, 1980’s-style fun. Friday the 13th meets Tucker and Dale Vs Evil in this story of a Jason-esque serial killer trying not to kill a group of teenagers. He waits in a run-down hotel for groups of victims, tasked by some sort of superior to stylishly kill them all. But he’s bored of this routine and instead decides he’ll warn and save this newest group. But, alas, he has a true talent for killing… whether he wants to or not…

ORCHIS MASCULA

This one was my favourite. I can’t quite describe why, but it filled me with nostalgia. I guess I’d maybe liken this to a the kind of plot you might find in a Goosebumps episode (but a scarier, adult version). A guy wakes up tied to a chair, with only a posh butler called Duncan for company. Duncan, though his manners are impeccable, proceeds to drill through the guy’s fingers and attach him to the chair he’s sitting by nailing him to it… through the fingers. Someone or something else is coming, and they can’t have the dude able to wriggle free of his bonds and escape. This one is deliciously gruesome with a great dash of black humour thrown in.

Overall, I thought this collection was really fun and I’d recommend it to general horror fans. If you’d like to get a copy or check out the author, I’ve popped some links below for you:
