ANOTHER 10 Great Contemporary Female Horror Authors

Dark bleatings, my dearest tribe! I’m back with another list of brilliant female horror authors that are currently publishing. As stated in my first post, I’m only including authors who are alive and still writing (because these types of lists usually use a lot of spaces for well-deserving authors, but that are unfortunately no longer with us).

Without further ado, and in no particular order…

Rachel Knightley

Dr. Rachel Knightley is, in my opinion, a staple of the UK indie horror scene. An academic, a writing and confidence coach, an editor, and an author of peculiar, creepy fiction, she covers a lot of bases and wears a lot of (fabulous) hats. Her short fiction, particularly the two-parters, are some of my favourite shorts ever. She thinks outside of the box, always, and offers really unnerving and weird tales.

Elizabeth J. Brown

Elizabeth might look sweet but don’t let that fool you into thinking she doesn’t splatter her book pages with blood and viscera. She is currently 3 books into her Brimstone Chorus series – scary supernatural novels that deal with monstrous curses and demons, and they are brilliant. She also has a store that sells seriously cool book-related merch.

Somer Canon

Somer Canon is an award-winning author for good reason. Who’s pulling punches around here? – because it isn’t Somer. She’ll punch you right in the gut. And the face. But just with her words, don’t worry. But also, yes worry, because of the nightmares. She writes novels, novellas, and short stories and if you want scary witches and werewolves, she’ll give you scary witches and werewolves.

Stephanie Ellis

Stephanie writes all manner of horror fiction, including folk horror and dystopian, two of my favourite genres of all time. She’s a thoughtful writer that often weaves in political and social themes, and comes up with some really weird, unusual, and unique ideas.

Silvia Moreno-Garcia

If you want a more unique take on hauntings, or a feminist slant on occultism, look no further than this fantastic author. She uses familiar subgenres and themes but puts an original twist on everything she writes.

Michelle Paver

If you’re hoping to be creeped out by a beautifully-drawn atmosphere, Michelle is your girl! She’s a master of setting (and gorgeously describing) a scene, and has a real talent for picking and exploring her locations. She’s also excellent at creating dread, particularly in her slow-burning stories.

You can find Michelle HERE.

Naomi Booth

Naomi Booth is an academic and an author of some of the weirdest and most stress-inducing fiction I’ve ever read, particularly in her pregnancy horror, Sealed, which not only deals with pregnancy, but a world-wide contagion that causes problems of the body horror variety. An unusual thinker, and a storyteller with a fresh voice, she’s definitely worth reading.

Mocha Pennington

Mocha, to my knowledge, has not yet published much, but she is definitely one to watch. So far, an author of just a few short stories (but my dark lord, such stories!), she’s an incredible story-teller. I can’t wait to see what’s next.

You can find Mocha HERE.

Anna Taborska

Anna Taborska does so much that I sincerely believes she is some sort of magical creature that never sleeps. She is not only an author, but a filmmaker and a poet. Her work covers everything from supernatural horror to World War 2 documentaries. Her areas of expertise are varied, vast, and inform her fiction in interesting ways.

You can find Anna HERE.

Pippa Pilgrim

Pippa Pilgrim (Pippa Bailey) is known for her short horror stories, book reviews, and being one half of the obsessive tea drinkers that make up Pugnacious Press, an indie horror publisher (among other things, would you believe?!). She’s been in the indie horror scene for many years and I suspect she’ll outlive us all. Don’t ask me why… she just has that sort of aura.

You can find Pippa HERE.

I hope that with this list, I’ve given you some new authors to check out. Be sure to let me know your favourite books written by anyone on this list, in case I’ve missed any!

Bleeeat!
