The Most Unique Thriller Book You Haven’t Read Yet – Millionaires Day

Dark bleatings, my lovely tribe! I’ve bleated on a bit about Kit Power’s Millionaires Day since October, and now I’m going to bleat a bit more. Kit, our fabulous Kit, staple of the UK indie horror scene, is spreading his wings and flapping off to the USA towards the end of this month. He’ll be experiencing a whole new facet of the horror book community on a different continent, stopping by Brian’s (Keene) and Mary’s (SanGiovanni) book store to sell his wares, meet new and existing readers, and sell books, and then he’s going to experience the sheer awesomeness of Scares That Care: AuthorCon V.

I love Kit but I’m so jealous that I almost wish….nah…I can’t wish anything even remotely unpleasant on him. Not even out of bitter, childish envy. Stupid lovely person with his stupid cool jeans and his stupid brilliant books, can’t even make fun of his personality.

Anyway, if you’ve not yet come across Millionaires Day, here’s the synopsis (lifted from Amazon):

On Sunday, 22nd December, 2019, everyone in the United Kingdom woke up with one million pounds in cash under their beds.

The miracle – or catastrophe – was never adequately explained. In the aftermath of the coronavirus pandemic the event was largely forgotten or treated as an urban legend.

Until now.

In this explosive volume, investigative journalist/historian Kit Power finally blows the lid off that surreal, impossible morning. Focussing on a few residents of Milton Keynes, a uniquely diverse city northwest of London, Power lays bare:

– the wonder of waking up to a found fortune through the eyes of a neglected child

– the madness and panic of an unprepared public from the perspective of an overworked police officer

– the graphic terror inflicted by a band of reprobate gangsters for whom too much is never enough

– the strangeness of it all through the outlook of man’s best friend

Note: for legal purposes, this book is marketed as fiction. But no one who lived through it could deny the profound impact of…

MILLIONAIRES DAY

If you’re on the fence, allow me to tickle your pickle with what the reviews are saying so far…

HAPPY GOAT HORROR – My own personal review.

“Kit has somehow simultaneously “created” a unique, thrilling, fun time in this story, and a dark, bleak look at how we’d likely run ourselves into extinction (in quite a short time frame). It’s a tremendous, more-ish page-turner, and one that I’d most definitely recommend to horror fans looking for a short, shocking, absolute tear-jerker-but-a-blast of a read.”

ERIK SMITH: HORROR AFICIONADO

“Millionaires Day – Kit Power – 5 out of 5 stars.”

WHAT’S GOOD TO READ

“While a short story, it is an engaging and thought-provoking tale about the power and corrupting influence of money and newfound wealth, inviting the reader to consider the various ways in which money can impact lives – for better or worse.”

GINGER NUTS OF HORROR

“On December 22, 2019, every person in the United Kingdom wakes up to find one million pounds in cash under their beds. This miraculous or catastrophic event sets off a chain of events that delves into human nature when faced with sudden wealth. Told from the perspectives of four separate but intertwined protagonists, Millionaires Day has the possibility of being one of Kit Powewr’s crowing glories.”

PENNY JONES – GOODREADS

“Kit Power brings beauty to the grim reality of life for the unfortunate protagonists within this book. Although fantastical in its premise, (What would you do if you woke to one million pounds beneath your bed?) The real horror is the dread that each of these characters wakes up to on every other day of their lives.”

TRISH – AMAZON

“On THAT day, suitcases appear underneath those that were sleeping. Money can buy you happiness after all. Nope – greed, desperation and exploitation unfolds at a rapid pace.

An ‘investigative’ snapshot into one town’s experience in the UK, explored through multiple threads that very cleverly weave together. An unexplained fog disorientates and the sudden silence of the town provides the eerie backdrop.

A great read.”

If you’d like to get your own copy and clutch it to your chest, lest a gang of London thugs try to pry it from your fingers, it can be found HERE. Alternatively, if you happen to be in the USA and are in/travelling to the Columbia PA or Williamsburg VA areas, you can catch the author himself selling books at Vortex Books & Comics (Sunday 23rd March) and then he’ll be trading at Scares That Care, AuthorCon V the following weekend.

Happy reading!
