Pinto, Mags and Sorensen, attempting to trace the whereabouts of Pinto’s rebel relative, Gregor, embark on a perilous journey across the face of the planet, pursued by Enforcers, attacked by aliens, and meeting a collection of strange humans. What they learn on the outside will make them question everything they thought true, as revelation follows revelation until the novella’s showdown and the discovery of a truth which will force them to reassess everything they’ve ever known to be true about their home planet and the races that live there.

Dark bleatings, my enigmatic tribe! I’m here to talk about a bit of a weird one today (meant as a compliment, always). It’s a novella that I personally might not strictly place in the horror genre, but it’s from PS Publishing so of course I was going to read it regardless.
It’s horror light, as I said, but there are some very dark dystopian themes here and a fair amount of real-life horror realisations for the characters we’re following. There’s also a nice twist of science fiction, a sprinkling of fantasy-esque-like characters and imagery, and some good all around fiction and relationships to follow.
I don’t have a huge amount to say because it’s a short read and the things I really liked about it would be spoilers if I talk about them here. Let me tell you this though – our small group leave ‘The Dome’, after believing for their whole lives that everything outside it is potentially lethal. They almost immediately come to realise that everything they thought they knew about the world is a lie, and thus begin their journey of discovery.

The imagery in particular was one of my favourite elements of the book. The writers did such a great job of not only painting the world but also how our characters were reacting to it. The characters were immediately easy to identify too, which I think is a rarer talent in authors than we think it is. Turning a page and knowing who’s speaking without needing dialogue tags is not common.
The adventure of our gang was super interesting, especially since we only know what they know so we’re finding everything out along with them. It was especially fun to piece things together, especially when I got a little ahead of the characters from the clues they’re given. There’s also a fair amount of dramatic strife in regard to their relationships.
Overall, I found this a very enjoyable and quick read and I’d recommend it to people who enjoy a broader mix of genres. If you’d like to check out the book or the authors, I’ve popped some links below for you:
