The ABC’s of Horror Authors: “A”: Part 1

Dark bleatings, everyone! I’ve made videos recommending a horror book for every letter of the alphabet (HERE and also HERE!), and I’ve also recommended horror movies for every letter of the alphabet (which you can see HERE and HERE!), and then it occurred to me that I could recommend horror authors this way too!

Of course, I love way too many to only list one per letter, so this will be an ongoing series with several parts per letter, which will run until I…run out of authors to rave about, I guess. That might take a while.

Anyway, for your reading pleasure, here are 3 horror authors whose first names begin with an “A”. Enjoy!

ANDREW JOSEPH WHITE

Andrew is an American author of adult and young adult horror fiction, and a New York Times best seller. What’s his fiction about, you may be asking? I’ve stolen this description from his website:

“His work focuses on the intersection of transgender and autistic identity through the lens of horror, monstrosity, violence, and rage.”

I came across Andrew thanks to many MANY recommendations from the good folk in the Books of Horror group on FB, and I’m glad I did (thanks you awesome lot!). The cherry on top is that he has a new book coming out in September (2025) and here’s the cover and synopsis (also swiped from his website!) in all its glory.

Festering masses of worms and flies have taken root in dark corners across Appalachia. In exchange for unwavering loyalty and fresh corpses, these hives offer a few struggling humans salvation. A fresh start. It’s an offer that none refuse.

Crane is grateful. Among his hive’s followers, Crane has found a chance to transition, to never speak again, to live a life that won’t destroy him. He even met Levi: a handsome ex-Marine and brutal killer who treats him like a real man, mostly. But when Levi gets Crane pregnant—and the hive demands the child’s birth, no matter the cost—Crane’s desperation to make it stop will drive the community that saved him into a devastating spiral that can only end in blood.

You Weren’t Meant to Be Human is a deeply personal horror; a visceral statement about the lives of marginalized people in a hostile world, echoing the works of Stephen Graham Jones and Eric LaRocca.

ARSYN QUINN

Next in the list, we have Arsyn Quinn – an author I’m entirely new to. Arsyn isn’t “strictly” a horror author but she came highly recommended to me from a lot of horror readers, who insisted I’d get a kick out her morally grey characters and dark romance worlds. Worlds such as…

What happens when an omega survives something that was supposed to destroy her?
Calliope took that survival and embarked on a mission of revenge. Meeting her alpha, Ayden and his beta Cain along the way. But when a new alpha comes into play, Dax the assertive psychopath, Calliope has to find a balance between completing her revenge and the new man. Will she make the right choice?

Devil’s pack is a horror movie inspired, pitch black OV romance. This is not for the feint of heart. You have been warned.

She survived the darkness once… now it’s come back for her.

Addiction tore Danica and Micah apart. Years later, fate (and maybe a little obsessive love) pulls them back together like no time has passed. But Micah isn’t the only man drawn to her fire.

Enter Kayden, Micah’s brother. Dangerous, magnetic, and impossible to resist. Their chemistry is instant and combustible. He isn’t the type to play nice… and neither is Thomas.

Thomas is the level-headed one. A police captain with a badge, a past, and a protective streak a mile wide. He knows Kayden’s secrets. He knows danger when he sees it. And right now, Danica’s in the middle of it.

Three men. One woman. A connection that defies reason and rules. But while passion flares and loyalties are tested, someone is watching. Waiting. Ready to drag Danica back into the shadows she barely escaped.

A.G.A. WILMOT

A.G.A. is an award-winning horror author and screenwriter (and also an editor and an artist!), based in Ontario. This creator’s productivity puts even my best weeks of effort to shame, quite frankly, and it’s unlikely that you’ve not come across them already. Their novel, Withered, was included in my own list of unique horror books (5 Indie Horror Books – Mini-Reviews and Recommendations!) and I’m going to recommend it to you again here:

After the tragic death of their father and surviving a life-threatening eating disorder, 18-year-old Ellis moves with their mother to the small town of Black Stone, seeking a simpler life and some space to recover. But Black Stone feels off; it’s a disquieting place surrounded by towns with some of the highest death rates in the country. It doesn’t help that everyone says Ellis’s new house is haunted — everyone including Quinn, a local girl who has quickly captured Ellis’s attention. And Ellis has started to believe what people are saying: they see pulsing veins in their bedroom walls and specters in dark corners of the cellar. Together, Ellis and Quinn dig deep into Black Stone’s past and soon discover that their town, and Ellis’s house in particular, is the battleground in a decades-long spectral war, one that will claim their family — and the town — if it’s allowed to continue.

Withered is queer psychological horror, a compelling tale of heartache, loss, and revenge that tackles important issues of mental health in the way that only horror can: by delving deep into them, cracking them open, and exposing their gruesome entrails.
