The Original’s Retribution – by David Watkins

Sergeant Peter Knowles has sworn to hunt down the remaining wolves in Britain and kill them all. He wants revenge for the massacre that took the lives of his friends. The wolf packs are scattered and scared, but someone new has started to galvanise them. Someone terrifying. Someone closer to Knowles than he could ever suspect…

Dark bleatings, my full-moon -loving tribe. I’m reviewing a sequel today, so if you haven’t already checked out The Original’s Return, the first in this trilogy, look away! Cast your eyes in any other direction, lest you see spoilers for what cameth before! HURL YOUR EYEBALLS ASUNDER!

So anyway, The Original’s Retribution is the second in the trilogy, and I’m going to assume that if you’re reading this, if your eyes are not asunder, that you know what happened in the first one.

Knowles is now the head of a special team that hunts werewolves – there are more out there, and by God, he’s gonna get ’em. He does, however, have sympathy for Jack, who didn’t want to be a werewolf in the first place. Bryant is still around too, only his motivations are much different these days…

And good old Jack – poor little furry fella – is under lock and key, and likely to be diced up and experimented on any minute. His wife still doesn’t even know for sure if he’s still alive, and he’s missing the early days of his kid’s life.

I shan’t detail the story past this point, lest there be spoilers. What I will say though is that I think Watkins has done a great job of upping the ante with this sequel. The first book set the world and the characters, and now this book is really having some fun with them. You like Original (essentially Alpha) werewolves? You want to see them get toothy and fight? You want to see other, non-Original werewolves struggling over their allegiances? You want shoot outs, blood baths, and absolute carnage? Orders vs. morals? Lots of human peril?

Well, you’ve come to the right place.

If you like the first book, I absolutely recommend this. As usual, Watkins showcases his signature style of action-infused horror, and adds even more heart to it this time. Let’s just hope no one rips it out…
