The World is infested with shapeshifting, man-eating daemons. Who can save us?
Javier Torres, ex-FBI Agent, battles with his deteriorating health as supernatural forces assail him from all sides and daemonic power awakens in him. Madison ‘Lucy’ Carpenter knows the true name of a daemon, and dark forces stop at nothing to pry that information from her. LaTanya Jefferson is forced to confront her past in hopes of rescuing her best friend from unspeakable torment. Greg Tillman is dragged into the world of supernatural monsters, and faces his most terrifying challenge: dating. The succubus Vespid is about to learn that there are things older and more powerful than daemons on Earth.
They’re all about to learn what ancient things lie unseen beneath the Old Black Water.

Dark bleatings, my lovely tribe. We’re discussing a sequel today, so I need to be careful and restrained so as to avoid spoiling the first book as well as this one.
In book one (A Girl’s Gotta Eat), Lucy forms a relationship with Vespid, a woman who saved her from an attack, but is wanted by the FBI in connection with a string of murders. Vespid is no ordinary human woman, and there are more like her, with more nefarious plans…
I really enjoyed the first story and was looking forward to this one, wondering what the plot could possibly be. The first book is both left open for sequel potential and wrapped up as a self-contained story with a nice neat bow. I didn’t know what to expect in book two, and I was both not surprised at all that the author came up with a good story, and pleasantly surprised by the directions she went in.
The first book heavily followed Lucy, and this one expanded on some of her relationships that weren’t covered as much before. We get the same characters again, but with a different focus on each of them. The monsters are back (both the human and supernatural kind), and now the “side characters” are coming into their own and exploring their own paths for us.
I especially loved LaTanya, who was my favourite character in the first story, though she wasn’t in much of it. I was delighted to find she took a more prominent role in this one so I could spend more time seeing the world through her eyes.
I’m sorry for how vague I’m being about the actual plot – I really can’t tell you much more than the plot as outlined in the synopsis at the top of the page. What I can tell you is that both books in the Suffering Sequence trilogy so far have been an absolute blast, and I can’t wait to read the third one!
