Dark bleatings, my beautiful tribe. If you follow me on YouTube or know me in real life, then you may have heard me talk in loud, sycophantic tones about this fellow. When I first discovered him, I don’t know. Why? I also don’t know, I most likely just stumbled across one of his YouTube channels one day. Or perhaps it was something to do with a scary story festive reading event, it’s unclear. In any case, our real obsession starts with his hilarious Let’s Play Silent Hill 2 (Remake) series.
Yes, that’s right, I’m talking about George Daniel Lea and his channels, Our Lives in Horror and Exaggerated Elegy.
So, what does he do, and why do I love him so, you might be asking?
Over on Our Lives in Horror, you will find many discussions of – you guessed it – various horror things. It’s always podcast style, and sometimes George is talking up a storm on a topic solo, and other times he’ll have a guest on to discuss a book or other stuff. I have been privileged to appear a few times and we always intend to talk about something specific (Stephen King is usually the plan) but tend to get derailed early on. Oh, well. His most recent guest at the time of writing this post is the immeasurably talented Paula D. Ashe (author of We Are Here to Hurt Each Other).
At Exaggerated Elegy, you’ll find interviews and podcasts (if you check out one thing, for the love of Baphomet, have a listen to George and Kit Power discussing Adolescence RIGHT HERE AT THIS HERE WEE LITTLE LINK), but you’ll also find a lot of gamer content in the form of Let’s Plays, and I honestly can’t tell where George shines more.
You might be thinking that there are loads of channels like this, and loads of podcasters and horror content, so why am I so enamoured with this dude specifically? Well, I’ll tell you.
I don’t know.
But if I had to hazard a guess, I might say that initially, it’s because he is so much smarter than I am, and I love listening to people smarter than me discussing things I love (or hate), and articulating their feelings in a way that helps me understand my own. I quite often love a thing, can’t really explain why, and then if George talks about it, I suddenly realise what it is about the thing I was so drawn to. His podcasts help me put my own thoughts in order but not just that, they offer new perspectives, points and counter-points, and quite often, a different lens than my own to view something to.
I love his Let’s Play stuff because he’s simply hilarious as he braves horror games, alone. His Silent Hill 2 videos, which I honestly can’t recommend enough, are effing hysterical. Watch George as he casually explains art references that the casual player wouldn’t even notice, walk you through the puzzles (that I personally can’t bloody solve), and – my favourite – exclaim quotes that are even more hilarious if you repeat them out of context, such as “there’s a wanker in ‘ere somewhere…”
Annnnd in general, he is just lovely, and his content, no matter how dark, always leaves me feeling uplifted and educated/highly amused.
The reason for this post is simply because I think fellow horror fans would love his content, and I’m trying to point you in his direction because he’s deserving of a far bigger audience.
Check out EXAGGERATED ELEGY and OUR LIVES IN HORROR for much amusement, thoughtful discussion, and horror info and trivia.
