When Emersyn fled the big city for a quieter life in the Midwest, she left all her troubles behind – or so she thought. She quickly discovers her quaint new home has a past of its own. Ten years prior a young woman killed herself inside the front door. Since that fateful day, the locals avoided the house. Not one to believe in the supernatural, Emersyn, along with a new friend, take it upon themselves to conduct a seance for answers.
They get much more than they bargained for when they awaken an ancient evil. The same evil that haunted the past resident.
Now they must scramble with little time to stop it. When Emersyn’s past comes back to haunt her, and innocent people get hurt, she has nowhere to turn. Until a police officer inserts himself into her life, together they will do what they can to put an end to the deadly shadows forever.
Can evil this powerful ever truly die?
Dark bleetings everyone! This is the third book by Theresa Jacobs that I’ve read (and the third we’ve reviewed here on Happy Goat Horror – I think Jolly Goat gobbled up the other two before I could get to them!) – and it’s my favourite book by this author so far. It has all the stuff I like…. scary supernatural entities, a race against time, and of course… plenty of horror!
I think the tension is built up quite organically, and also I really liked the sneaky inclusion of the B plot, which I completely forgot about until it reared its ugly head later at the opportune time. There were times that I questioned the actions of some of the characters – for example, after something extremely scary happens, Riley just swans off on a date as if nothing is amiss. I thought things like that were a little odd and more in service of moving the plot along than in keeping with realism, but generally speaking, I enjoyed the characters and was on board.

I won’t spoil the ending for you but let’s just say this…. there’s room for more! The story does end, and it ends in a satisfying way. However, the door (and I mean allll the doors) are wide open should this story feel compelled to continue! If you’re looking for scary scenes while the clock ticks down too fast on the fates of the characters, blood, and occultism gone wrong, this is a book for you!
I’d recommend this to fans of supernatural and spooky horror (especially those who like anything in the realm of malevolent spirits or demons!).
